Broken relationships:
Let me help you.
Relationships are usually interactions (physical, emotional, spiritual, business, social) between people. However, think of self esteem, shame, guilt, enthusiasm, sense of achievement, to name but a few. These are relationships we have with ourselves.
When we get broken internally by things such as loss of someone we love, emotional damage, destructive behaviours resulting from uninhibited anger, etc, we need help to repair ourselves. Things such as death can’t be repaired, of course but our acceptance or understanding of the situation can help us get towards some degree of healing.
When we want acceptance or understanding of ourselves under these circumstances, getting help from another person will speed up the healing process.
For those who need help with any of these things, I am here to help.
Anger
Anxiety and anger are two of our most common emotions. Anger is a powerful emotion that can have a negative impact on your life if it is not managed properly.
Anger is a natural, but destructive emotion that can have far reaching consequences and even lead to acts of physical or verbal abuse. In some cases anger can make people bitter for many years. Anger issues need to be addressed through counseling.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a condition in which a person experiences extreme and persistent fear or worry. This can be related to specific events, such as social interactions, or to generalised anxiety over day to day issues. Anxiety is often associated with panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The first step to managing anxiety is understanding what it is and how it affects you. It’s important to know that anxiety disorders are treatable and that there are many ways to help manage your symptoms.
Bullying
Children are not the only people to suffer bullying. The home and work environment are also places where bullying occurs. Bullying is a form of aggressive behaviour that involves repeated, intentional acts to cause fear or harm.
Those who suffer bullying need assistance to overcome the fear, lack of self esteem and feeling of isolation which comes from this practice. Bullies are often motivated by a need to feel better about themselves or gain social status and they too, need counseling to address their own need for acceptance.
Depression
Depression is a mental illness characterized by extreme sadness, loss of interest in things one previously enjoyed, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, lack of sleep, fearfulness and even lack of appetite. Depression can be caused by genetics, trauma or abuse, difficult life experiences such as divorce or death of a loved one, or chemical imbalances in the brain.
The best way to prevent and treat depression is to find out what may have caused it in the first place. Seeking assistance to not only find the cause of depression but to investigate ways of coping or overcoming this illness is very important.
Grief & Loss
Everyone copes with grief differently and there is no one way address grief. Some people like to talk about their feelings openly while others prefer to keep it as a private matter. Grief and loss are not only related to the death of a loved one. Losing employment, isolation from family, death of a pet or lifetime friend.
The loss suffered in many of these events is sometimes very difficult to manage on your own, leading to further grief and even trauma.
Conflict & grievances
Workplace grievances are a common occurrence. The most common grievances are about issues such as pay, benefits, work-life balance and therefore, involve dealing with Management. Being bullied, competition between employees, pay disparity for work performed or even racial or sexual vilification are issues between colleagues.
Conflict between neighbours are usually between two households but can be broader than this. The disagreement may be about noise, overgrown trees or parking.
Families can often fall into grievances over wills and family entitlements. These matters, if not dealt with can result in acts of verbal or physical violence and can go on for years. Counseling is a good way to mediate these issues.
Other relationships
Relationship breakdown is a common problem between parent and child and this can involve 10 year olds and eighty year olds.
Separation and divorce can cause conflict between multiple families and their friends.
Pupil, teacher and school relationships can also be vulnerable to breakdown as can peer to peer.
As a society we often think that relationships are forever or that all parents or siblings should love each other no matter what. This is not the case so dealing with breakdowns in relationships is an important issue in Mediation.
Trauma
Trauma is a type of stress that can be caused by an incident, event, or experience. It can also be caused by the witnessing of traumatic events. Trauma is one of the leading causes for PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) and it can occur in anyone at any stage in life.
Confusion over how to handle such events can lead to a person exhibiting anxiety, flashback, depression nightmares or insomnia. Many situations such as childhood abuse can result in lifelong trauma. Tools for treating trauma include counseling which can be one-on-one or within group settings.
Family breakdown
For breakdown leading to separation or divorce, couples need to seek mediation. Not only to help calm frayed nerves and get practical matters such as custody and property issues in perspective. It is also necessary before these matters can be resolved by a court.
